Kids’ Birthday Parties

Planning a kid’s birthday party can be stressful. I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be. There are so many fun ideas to choose from. Below are just a few unique ideas I’ve found. Keep in mind that these pictures are posted by professional party planners! There’s no need to try to recreate all the details. After all, you deserve to enjoy your kid’s birthday too. Children are most interested in playing with friends, eating cake, and opening presents on their birthday anyway. Below are a few of my favorite theme ideas, but don’t forget to ask your birthday girl or boy what they want at their party before choosing!

1. Mad Scientist Party from Pop Sugar Moms. You don’t have to get this fancy, but I love the gummy worms on the trays and the glass vases filled to look like chemical mixtures of some sort. Have the children create their own mixes too!

2. Goldilocks and the Three Bears from Pop Sugar Moms. Have children pick out seats at the table that are juuust right for them!

3. The Great Outdoors from Apartment Therapy. I love this one because it gives kids a chance to run around outside and provides a sense of adventure.

4. Happy Bee Day from Enchanted Events & Design. How cute is this cake?! This would be a perfect party for those spring birthdays that are hard to find themes for.

5. Princess and the Pea Pajama Party. If you have a little girl, you have to take a minute to check this one out.

When done right, your children will remember their birthday parties forever. You don’t need perfect decorations or expensive cakes to please your little one. If you keep their interests in mind, they will be sure to have a memorable day.

I had a great time sewing this pirate flag for a birthday party at the Aquatic Center in Christiansburg recently. The kids were really getting into character. Please feel free to contact me if you need something similar done.

My Inspiration

Becoming a mother has been the best job I’ve ever had. Everyone has a unique experience as a mother. Even if you’re in survival mode and it’s a miracle when you can take a shower or get some sleep, those smiling faces remind you that it’s all worth it. They make you feel complete. Becoming a mother has led me to do things I never would have expected, one of them being starting Sew Sophisticated. My two girls have been my inspiration! When I was struggling to find unique baby items locally, I came up with the idea to sew items by myself. When my older daughter Ele began to show an interest in sewing, I got the idea to organize sewing classes.

My daughters influenced me to grow a business that I love and to form a deeper respect for myself as a woman, a mom, and an entrepreneur.

I’m so grateful to have my two girls in my life and to have amazing customers who love being parents as much as I do.

Neighborhood Toy Store Day

Onesie

I love community events. There’s nothing like going to one place and seeing all your friends there. From the Big Event to the Farmer’s Market to Steppin’ Out to (of course) Hokie football games, Blacksburg has so much to offer. Even though Blacksburg is a small town, there is so much life here. With that being said, I am very excited about the upcoming community event on Saturday.

Neighborhood Toy Store Day will be this Saturday, November 9, at Imaginations Toy Store on Main Street in Blacksburg, Va., and I will be there from 1-4 p.m. taking special orders for Christmas. There will be games and storytime from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., so make sure to bring your kids and their friends for a fun-filled day. My items, including the onesies pictured above, are sold at Imaginations Toy Store if you are interested in checking them out.

Don’t forget that we are still taking nominations for the Sew Sophisticated Superlatives, and you can leave a comment on any blog post to nominate someone in your community. Read my last blog post to view the categories of superlatives. The winners will receive a free Sew Sophisticated item!

Learning to Slow It Down

I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween (and got to sneak a piece of candy from that large pile your little one managed to collect). The sugar rush of Halloween is hopefully over, but that doesn’t mean the craziness of life has stopped. Next thing we know, it’ll be Thanksgiving, then Christmas, and then a whole new year. So how can we make sure we slow down and enjoy each day with our kids? Especially as busy moms, it can be tough to know the answer. I do know I have a list of five things to do with my kids before Thanksgiving gets here. The list is manageable and will be sure to make the holiday fun. I would love to hear some creative ideas from you as well, so please leave a comment about what you do to balance it all. Here’s my list:

DSC_0142

  1. Read before bed: This one seems simple and obvious, but it’s hard to make time to read a book every night before bed. I try to keep this a nightly tradition because it’s one thing my girls love. I’ve heard 10 Fat Turkeys is a great book to teach kids how to count backwards.
  2. Cook or bake together: One day they will be on their own, and they’re going to have to feed themselves! I love to have my girls help me in the kitchen. It makes eating together that much more special. This year, I’m excited to make these adorable Turkey cupcakes!a98de8afd11883cbc57ce5ae6778ebe3
  3. Make a craft: There are way too many cute Thanksgiving craft ideas, but I definitely want to try making these pinecone turkeys with my girls.
  4. Play a game: Games never fail to be fun for me. I always find myself laughing at something, and they are a great way for children to get some energy out, especially on a lazy day like Thanksgiving. The game “Cross the Sea” looks hilarious. One kid is the New World, another is the Mayflower, and the rest are rocks. The Mayflower wears a blindfold and must be guided with directions around the rocks in order to make it to the New World.
  5. Be thankful: I love this idea of a Thankful tree. This is such a great way to teach children what Thanksgiving is really all about…and maybe to remind ourselves as well!

Again, please leave a comment and let me know what you do to make the crazy holiday season enjoyable and stress-free.

Try These Recipes for Fall and Winter. They’re Sew Good!

In the spirit of fall and the upcoming winter months, I have started to find new recipes to try.  I love my cookbooks, but sometimes it’s just simpler to check one of my favorite online sources, Pintrest.  The site has so many ideas and variations of recipes with pictures included!  After all, who enjoys cooking something without a picture of what it should look like?

I would like to share some of the “kid-friendly” recipes I have stumbled across recently that are on my to-try-list for the next month!

Image

This is one that I have been eyeing for the last week: Crock Pot Turkey Chili. It sounds absolutely wonderful with ground turkey, corn, bell peppers, tomatoes and spices.  It has no beans and mild spices to help with those picky eaters.

Image

This one does have some beans in it, but if your children aren’t picky it seems like a pretty simple meal for a weeknight.  It incorporates chicken, corn, tomatoes, various spices, and shredded cheese.  Basically all the best parts of a chicken tortilla in soup form! Mmm….Delicious!

Image

And considering the month of October has come to an end, the pumpkins receive an honorable mention with this recipe: Whole Wheat Pumpkin Pancakes.  A healthy way to incorporate whole wheat into special breakfasts!

I hope these inspired you to find some new fall recipes to try! To view these recipes and many more, click here.

The uniqueness of customized gifts

Don’t you love when a friend gives you a present specifically customized to you? Whether it be a concert ticket to your favorite band, a birthday cake with your nickname on it, or a bottle of your signature scent, a customized gift says I know who you are and what you like. Sometimes it becomes hard in the craziness of life to pay attention to all the individual quirks of friends, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters and husbands. I often find myself wondering does she like chocolate cake with vanilla icing or vanilla cake with chocolate icing?

The good news is that you can still give customized gifts, even if you forget some of the details. As long as you can remember their name, customized items are possible. I love taking requests for personalized items such as this customized “Genevieve” journal or “Chef Caroline” chef hat.

Talking Art and Children

Welcome back the Sew Sophisticated blog! Today, I am talking art and children.

Caroline Drawing Big

Art Kit

There’s something incredibly special about art made by children. Do you remember making something as a kid and thinking you did a really good job? Remember how excited you were to show your parents or babysitter your masterpiece? Watching my girls experience that same moment never gets old. My favorite part about my children’s artistic skill is being able to display their artwork at home. The art displayed in our home puts a smile on my face every day, and it encourages my girls to try new art techniques.

Recently my girls have been trying out some Sew Sophisticated art tools such as the chalkboard mat and the art kit, which includes colored pencils and a journal. If you are interested in these items for your little van Gogh, you can find them at Imaginations Toy Store in Blacksburg or you can use the contact form below to get in touch with me.
